Heavy Item Movers

Safes, gym equipment, oversized furniture, pianos, pool tables and hot tubs, moved by our own crews with the right equipment, extra hands and a route planned ahead.

Heavy Item Movers for the Pieces That Need a Plan

Most furniture can be carried by two strong people. Some items cannot. A gun safe can weigh several hundred pounds or more, a slate pool table comes apart into heavy slabs, and a hot tub is usually too wide for a standard gate. As heavy item movers, we treat these pieces as their own job inside the move, with the right equipment, the right number of people and a route worked out before anything is lifted. Crews from our Dayton moving company and our Cincinnati movers plan every heavy lift the same way.

What We Move

We move home and gun safes, armoires and solid wood wardrobes, oversized sectionals, large refrigerators, washers and dryers relocated as-is, and home gym equipment such as treadmills, ellipticals and weight machines. Appliances should be disconnected from water, gas and power before we arrive, since we move them but do not install them. Three of the heaviest jobs have their own dedicated process and page: our pool table moving service for slate tables, hot tub relocation for spas going to a new yard, and upright and grand piano moving for instruments of every size.

The Equipment and Crew Behind Each Lift

Heavy items move on equipment built for them: appliance dollies with ratchet straps, four-wheel furniture dollies, stair-rated hand trucks, thick moving pads, ramps and plywood runners to protect floors and lawns. We add extra crew when an item calls for it instead of asking two people to manage a load that needs four. On stairs, each step is taken under control with people above and below the piece. Floors, door frames and railings are padded before the item moves an inch. A door may come off its hinges for a few minutes if that gives us the extra inch we need.

Measuring the Path Before Moving Day

The biggest problem with heavy items is often not the weight but the path. A safe that went into a basement before a remodel may not fit the new stairwell, and an armoire that fit through the old front door may not clear a tight turn at the new house. Before we quote, we ask for the item’s dimensions and approximate weight, plus photos of doors, stairs, turns and the ground outside. If something truly will not fit, we tell you before move day, not halfway down the stairs.

These guys were on time, professional, friendly, and very efficient. We could not have asked for a better crew for a 12 hour moving day. They never complained and just stayed focused on getting everything done. They protected our furniture, pictures, and the walls and floor of our brand new house.I highly recommend Dow for an exceptional moving process.
They did a great job moving some very heavy furniture, would definitely recommend.

Heavy Item Movers FAQs

Should I empty my safe before you move it?

Arrow Down

Yes. Take out cash, firearms, ammunition, documents and valuables and move them yourself or keep them somewhere secure. An empty safe is lighter, and loose contents can shift and damage the door or locking mechanism while the safe is tilted on a dolly. Leave the door closed and locked during the move, and keep the combination or key with you rather than taped to the safe.

How do you get a gun safe down basement stairs without damaging them?

Arrow Down

We strap the safe to a heavy-duty stair-rated hand truck and take it one step at a time, with crew members above and below controlling the weight. Stair treads and the walls along the way are padded, and plywood can be laid over carpet or soft steps to spread the load. Before the day, we check the stair width, the turn at the bottom and the headroom.

Why do you ask for measurements and photos before moving a heavy item?

Arrow Down

Weight and size decide how many people we send and which equipment goes on the truck. Photos of the doors, stairs, tight turns, the driveway and any grass or gravel show us where ramps, plywood or extra hands will be needed. Without them, a crew can arrive short-handed or find that a piece cannot clear a doorway, which wastes your time and ours.

Can you move home gym equipment like treadmills and weight machines?

Arrow Down

Yes. Treadmills are usually folded or partly taken apart and moved on a dolly, and weight plates are packed separately so the machine is lighter and nothing slides loose. Multi-station weight machines often need cables and arms removed before they will fit through a door. Have the owner’s manual handy if you still have it, and let us know the brand and model when you ask for a quote.

Will you disconnect and hook up my refrigerator or washer?

Arrow Down

We move large appliances as-is, but we do not disconnect or reconnect them. Water lines, gas lines and dryer vents should be handled by you or a qualified technician before we arrive and after we deliver. Empty and defrost the refrigerator a day ahead, and secure the washer drum if your model came with transit bolts. We pad, strap and place the appliance where you want it.
