Essential Tips from Dow Moving
Moving your computer can be stressful, especially if you want to avoid any damage to your valuable PC. At Dow Moving, serving Dayton and the surrounding areas, we understand how important it is to keep your electronics safe during a move. That’s why we’ve put together this step-by-step guide on how to properly pack and transport your desktop computer.
Before you start unplugging cables and packing, clear your desk to create enough working space. Don’t forget to back up all your important files and documents to an external hard drive or cloud storage. This extra step ensures your data is safe, no matter what happens during the move.
Properly shut down your computer through your operating system and then turn off the power switch on the back of your PC tower. Unplug the power cable from the outlet and carefully disconnect all other wires and peripherals. To make setup easier later, label each cable and wire as you unplug them.
If possible, pack your PC on a non-carpeted surface to avoid static electricity that can damage internal components.
Remove the plexiglass side panel of your PC tower to inspect and clean the interior. Use microfiber cloths, cotton swabs, and canned air or an air duster to remove dust. If you have a water-cooled PC, make sure to drain all liquids before moving it to prevent leaks.
Consider removing heavy and fragile components like your graphics card. If you have its original box, pack the card inside with cushioning materials like crumpled paper or foam for extra protection.
Some people use expanding foam inside the tower for extra protection, but opinions vary—choose the method you feel most comfortable with.
Once you’re confident the interior is protected, reattach the plexiglass panel.
Avoid wrapping your PC in blankets or wool, as these materials can create static electricity. Ideally, use the original box your computer came in, which should include anti-static foam designed specifically for your PC.
If the original box isn’t available or is damaged, purchase a specialized PC shipping box. Line the box with non-static bubble wrap or packing paper, place your tower inside, and fill any gaps with crumpled paper to keep it secure. Seal the box thoroughly with tape and clearly mark it as “Fragile” and “This Side Up.”
Because PC towers are bulky yet fragile, load them first into your vehicle so you can carefully arrange other items around them. If you’re packing your car trunk, snugly place soft items around the PC to keep it stable without compressing it too tightly.
The safest spot for your PC is usually on the floor behind the passenger seat where it won’t shift during transport. If you need to put your PC in a moving truck, place it near the cab alongside other fragile items, and never stack anything heavy on top.
